The Circulatory System

New Innovations for the Circulatory System

Many new technologies have been made to imporve peoples heart conditions. There are pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators(ICD), stents, prosthetic valves, and CT scanners. All of these technologies help diagnose conditions and more effectively treat patients.
A pacemaker is a device for people who's heart beats are irregular or weak. The pacer can detect when the heart is going to beat, if the heart beat doesn't come at the correct time the device send electrical signals that tell the hearts to beat at that time. An ICD is a more advanced version of a pacemaker, they monitor the heart constantly. When irregular heart beat is detected electrical signals are sent out. ICDs and pacemakers do the same thing for slow heart rate, but an ICD also is capable of 'high-energy electric therapy' for the fast heart rates. Another name for that therapy is defibrillation shocks.
A stent is a small mesh tube that's used to treat narrowed or weakened arteries in the body. Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart to other parts of your body. Angioplasty is when you have a stent put in to your artery, angioplasty is a procedure to restore blood flow and help prevent an artery from bursting. The stents help keep the artery unblocked for the months or years to come. Some types of stents are medicated, they have medicine on the outside that is continuously released over time.
Another interersting innovation was the Prosthetic Valve. The first prosthetic cardiac valve was implanted in a patient with aortic regurgitation. This took place on September 11, 1952. Then the heart-lung machine was introduced in 1954, people were amazed, and all of the doctors that had, had a patient with a defective valve could dream and think about how one day this patients life could be different. And that day did come, by 1967 doctors were introducing the prosthetic valves to patients.
There are a whole new generation of CT Scanners, they take clear pictures of the heart enabling it to show arteries and blood blots of any other blockages. People thing these new CT scanners are a very good thing. Doctors like how the new CT scanner has a lot clearer picture and is better. Also with all of the information it might be enough to guide treatments.
